Australian dairy cattle are highly prized overseas, as they have good genetics, thrive in variable weather conditions, and benefit from Australia’s freedom from major livestock diseases.
While the number of dairy cattle being exported is small in comparison to beef cattle, they are generally high value animals, and an important part of the industry. Live exports also help dairy farmers to diversify their operations, providing income which is separate from milk prices and can be achieved without significant investment.
China has been the key market for Australian dairy cattle for many years, but demand ebbs and flows depending on the size of the local herd, economic conditions and consumption of milk products.
This project is aimed at identifying new markets for Australian dairy cattle, and ways to increase demand or access in existing markets. It will assess current and future demand in countries which import dairy cattle, look at Australia’s competition, and evaluate trade barriers including regulations both in Australia and in our markets.
This project is managed by LiveCorp and is a collaboration with Dairy Australia.
Identify potential overseas markets for Australian dairy cattle
Analyse and assess the current market conditions (including demand and trends), regulatory requirements, and trade barriers for each identified market
Develop a workplan to expand market access and increase market share for Australian dairy cattle in priority markets.
Provide strategic recommendations for overcoming trade barriers, improving export supply chains, and enhancing the competitiveness and marketing of Australian dairy cattle.
A better understanding of the global market for dairy cattle will increase Australia’s ability to work on removing barriers and take advantage of opportunities. Increased dairy cattle exports will help to support Australian dairy farmers and their local communities.
