RD&E project

Supporting the Indonesian dairy industry

Summary

Indonesia's dairy industry currently meets only 23% of its domestic milk demand, and the government has set an ambitious target to double per capita milk consumption by 2030. To achieve this without relying even more heavily on imports will require a significant increase in domestic milk production, so the government plans to import one million dairy cattle over the next four years.

This project will leverage Australian expertise in tropical livestock management by consolidating research across the beef, dairy, and grains industries. It will also explore opportunities and risks associated with supplying Australian dairy cattle, particularly high-yield breeds, to support Indonesia's Nutritious Meals Program.

This project is managed by the Livestock Export RD&E Program, a collaboration between LiveCorp and Meat & Livestock Australia.

Objectives
  • Consolidate existing research on Indonesia's dairy sector, including supply dynamics and production systems.

  • Engage with stakeholders from LiveCorp, MLA, Dairy Australia, and the industry to incorporate insights from previous projects.

  • Collaborate with other organisations to gather information regarding best practices and market trends.

  • Identify opportunities and risks in supplying Australian dairy cattle to Indonesia.

  • Assess the current state of Indonesia's dairy sector to guide collaboration strategies.

  • Develop extension materials to summarise research findings for stakeholders.

Benefits to industry

Helping stakeholders to identify risks and growth opportunities in the Indonesian dairy market will strengthen cross-sector collaboration and align Australia's livestock export strategy with evolving market demands. Additionally, the project will support the health and welfare of Australian dairy cattle exported to Indonesia.
