Benchmarking cost competitiveness of Australia's live cattle export supply chain

Summary

Australia is a significant player in the global live cattle export market but increasing competition makes it essential to continually assess and enhance the profitability and cost competitiveness of the supply chain.

This project will use a socio-economic analysis to quantify the economic contributions of live cattle exports, focusing on in-market employment and regional economic benefits. It will analyse logistics costs, regulatory burdens, and market access challenges, comparing Australia with other major cattle-exporting nations. The project will also consider macroeconomic trends, such as changing meat consumption patterns in key markets (Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Middle East), economic growth, and rising protein demand, identifying opportunities for Australia's cattle export industry.

This project is managed by the Livestock Export RD&E Program, a collaboration between LiveCorp and Meat & Livestock Australia.

Objectives
  • Identify the economic benefits of the Australian live cattle export industry, focusing on value-added contributions, employment, and income generation in regional Indonesian economies.

  • Compare the economic contributions of Australian live cattle exports with those of the domestic red meat processing sector, highlighting where live exports offer distinct advantages.

  • Benchmark Australia's cattle export supply chain against competitors, focusing on cost structures, logistics efficiency, market access, and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Identify opportunities for cost saving and efficiency improvements throughout the supply chain, focusing on logistics, compliance, and market access.

Benefits to industry

This project will provide industry stakeholders with insights to improve the cost efficiency, competitiveness, productivity and profitability of the cattle export industry while upholding Australia's high animal welfare standards.
